Every sitting president since Ronald Reagan has left a confidential letter offering advice tucked in the top drawer of the Resolute Desk in the Oval Office. Eight years ago, President George W. Bush left one for incoming President Barack Obama. And now that Obama's days in the White House are dwindling, he too, will be doing the same for Donald Trump. However, Obama's daughters, Sasha and Malia, received an unexpected letter from the twin daughters of George W. Bush, Jenna and Barbara. Just like their father passed the torch, so have the Bush girls, offering up advice to the teens. "We have watched you grow from girls to impressive young women with grace and ease," wrote Barbara Bush and Jenna Bush Hager in an open letter published by Time Magazine titled “Playing House in the White House.” The Bush daughters realized that since 2008, when they showed barely-double-digit-aged Obama girls around, there was more advice they had to extend as they move into their next chapter of life.
"Now you are about to join another rarified club, one of former First Children — a position you didn't seek and one with no guidelines," the Bushes wrote. "But you have so much to look forward to. You will be writing the story of your lives, beyond the shadow of your famous parents, yet you will always carry with you the experiences of the past eight years."
Knowing the pressures and constant criticism that comes with growing up in the White House, the Bushes also explained that nurturing relationships with the permanent staff in the residence helped them adjust, even maintaining contact with their Secret Service agents, who they said "put their lives on hold for us."
"You have lived through the unbelievable pressure of the White House," the Bush daughters continued. "You have listened to harsh criticism of your parents by people who had never even met them. You stood by as your precious parents were reduced to headlines. Your parents, who put you first and who not only showed you but gave you the world. As always, they will be rooting for you as you begin your next chapter. And so will we."
Read the full letter here.
