Travel Trials: I’ve Put On 15 Pounds From Traveling

There’s only one thing I love more than food and that’s traveling. When I can combine those two things I’m in heaven, but now that I’ve slowed down on my trips abroad just a bit I’m in hell — or at least my waistline is.

At the start of last year, my job instituted a telecommute policy that allowed me to pick up and go far more often, and I took advantage immediately. At least once a month, I grab one of the flight deals I come across and spend a week or two in a new city or foreign country. Since I’m still working during these trips, I spend my days taking care of business and by the time the evening comes I’m so anxious to get out and explore I don’t take time to exercise like I normally do back home. And, like I told you, I love food so most of that exploration involves trying out local cuisine at various restaurants and their signature cocktails and wine on top of whatever cafe I usually visit for lunch.

This is one of the things I love most about being abroad — indulging — but it’s catching up with me now, bad. And though I usually spend my weekends away doing walking tours, hiking, or some other type of physical activity, it’s not enough to balance my bad behavior during the week. And what’s worse, it’s getting harder and harder for me to be disciplined with my diet and exercise when I return home.

Over time I could tell I’d gained a little weight, but it wasn’t until I stepped on the scale a couple of weeks ago that I saw the true damage: 15 extra pounds on my body over the course of a year. I want to drop the weight, but I don’t want to sacrifice traveling or the sweet indulgences that come with it to do so. What’s a food-loving traveler to do?
