New Jack Swing may be a new term for some, but the smooth yet hip genre is nothing new-- especially to those who lived through the 80s and 90s. The term was coined by The Village Voice writer Barry Michael Cooper and combined the slang term "new jack" (meaning johnny come) with music of the swing era (of the 30s speakeasies or 80s/90s crackhouses.) We'd almost forgotten how legendary the music genre was, but after watching BET's epic<em> New Edition Story</em>, our memory of the impact of this "mental" style was renewed.
