Late last month, Tina Campbell of Mary Mary caught the ire of quite a few people after she shared why she has forgiven the antics of Donald Trump and chosen to pray for him. As she told her followers, "I choose to stand with him and pray for him; because, as a follower of Jesus Christ and a firm believer in the Holy Bible, according to 1 Timothy 2:1-3, I have been commanded to: 'The first thing I want you to do is pray every way you know how... especially for rulers and their governments, to rule well. This is the way our Savior God wants us to live." She's not alone in encouraging people to pray for Trump to be successful in the White House. In an interview with her sister Erica on Get Up! Mornings with Erica Campbell, singer and Pastor Donnie McClurkin said Christians need to stop creating chaos through protest and focus on prayer. According to him, that's the role of the church right now. "Let the world protest, but the job of the church now is to go into prayer," he said. "And to pray that number one, he succeeds. Because if he fails, we have to deal with the consequences as a nation." Citing Trump's "vitriolic speech," "misogynistic ideals,""racism" and just his overall basic lack of policies, McClurkin maintained that he didn't vote for the man and isn't happy that he won. However, he said we need to realize that our true power comes in voting, not through protest. "I believe that we need to know what our vote really means and how to utilize it," he told Erica. "But I don’t want us to get caught up in the rigor now, this protest...The protests do nothing but rile up people. It causes people’s anger to rise up and it gives us a false sense of involvement. The true involvement is at the voting both." Erica disagreed, saying that protest does get people's attention and stirs things up for good reason. It shows that people want to hold the president accountable for the things he says and does. But McClurkin stated that he doesn't feel today's protests really create the change those who participate in them might think, and the money spent to have a police presence at them is not a good use of "our money" as taxpayers. "The bottom line is this: there is hardly ever follow-up," McClurkin said. "It's a flash in the pan to try and make a statement, but no statement is made." Overall, he thinks that it's time to forgo political parties and hurt feelings for creating progress through prayer. "America is in a place it's never been before and the Christian has got be who God called us to be," he told Erica. "Not Democrat, not Republican." Images via WENN
